Mrs Heintz studied material science (Dipl.-Ing., CAU Kiel) and obtained a PhD at the Technical University of Hamburg. She joined 3M in 2012 as a product developer for structural paste adhesives in the division of Automotive and Aerospace Solutions. Having a background in fiber reinforced composite materials, she took over the project management for FML related 3M activities in 2014.

3M Material Development for New FML - New prepreg material for next generation FML

FMLs’ next generation demands automatic application during manufacturing because of increased production speed and raised operational throughput. A new design, the approach of significant weight and costs savings, the desire for improved thermal performance – a profile which is asking for a step change of the current way including a new prepreg.

Also preferably 1 product should cover all application needs, compared to 2 types of prepreg on current A380 for different temperature needs.

3M officially joined the FML project in 2013 and started the material development based on many years’ experience with structural adhesive films but with the challenge of handling unidirectional glass fibers.  After successfully passing the material screening phase proving that advanced mechanical behavior from 180°C curing can be obtained by using only 120°C, optimization and process improvement were brought into focus. The newly developed prepreg material shows REACH compliance, contains no VOC and is perfectly compatible with 3M´s adhesive films. This presentation will introduce some of the technical benefits of the material.
