Finding a position

In order to be admitted as a TU Delft doctoral candidate, you must first find a professor from TU Delft who is willing to act as your proposed promotor (supervisor). Subsequently, the research topic should be decided on. You will also need to obtain a source of funding for your PhD project.

PhD position vacancies

Visit the TU Delft vacancy website, or the website of the department or research school that you are interested in. If you have found no relevant vacancies on the relevant websites, you may consider sending an open job application to the secretary of the department of your interest, or to the Faculty Graduate School.


The admission requirements for doctoral candidates are recorded in Article 2 of the TU Delft Doctoral Regulations.

Admission requirements

According to Dutch law and the TU Delft Doctoral Regulations a doctoral candidate should be in possession of a Dutch Master’s degree. This may be a Master of Science or a Master of Arts degree from a University or College of Higher Education.

Naturally, doctoral candidates with foreign Master degrees are also admitted to TU Delft. Some foreign degrees are evaluated by the TU Delft Admissions Office. This office determines whether the foreign degree can be considered as an equivalent of the Dutch Master degree.

Preparation and paperwork

For every would-be doctoral candidate of TU Delft, a check of their eligibility is standard procedure. This means that, besides a letter and a CV, all applications must include scans of the (highest) diploma and transcript. Furthermore, at the start of their Doctoral Programme all doctoral candidates must be registered as such at the TU Delft Graduate School. You need to have a high level of English proficiency to study and work at the TU. In most cases, you must submit proof of English proficiency from a standardized international test. Language proficiency certificates older than two years are not accepted.


  • Pre-university (vwo) certificate
  • Master’s degree from a programme which is taught in English
  • Students with a nationality of one of these countries: USA, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australian, New Zealand, or Canada.

Intake meeting

Once they have obtained a PhD position at TU Delft, all doctoral candidates have to be formally registered as such by the University Graduate School (UGS)*. An important aspect of the registration process is the verification of the candidates' eligibility. All candidates are required to prove that they meet the admission requirements by showing valid documents. This means that most candidates have to start gathering the required documents before they start to work on their PhD.
In order to facilitate this process, the Faculty Graduate Schools inform the UGS of all new candidates. The UGS aims to invite all new doctoral candidates for their intake meeting within the first 2-6 weeks of their Doctoral Programmes. Candidates situated abroad will receive information via e-mail and their registration can be completed via post.
If you did not receive an invitation in the first month of your Doctoral Programme, please contact your Faculty GS.

During the intake meeting the UGS will:

  • check your academic degree and passport;
  • inform you about the GS requirements and guidelines, e.g. the DE programme, the PhD agreement and yearly progress meetings;
  • discuss the Doctoral Monitoring Application (DMA) and Coachview system.

What to bring to the intake:

If you have a degree from a Dutch university:

  • A certified copy of your Master Degree: if you do not have a certified copy you may also bring your original degree.
  • Your passport (which should state the city or town where you were born)

If you have a degree from a non-Dutch university:

  • A certified copy of your Master degree: if you do not have a certified copy you may also bring your original degree.
  • A certified copy of the transcript of records belonging to your Master degree: if you do not have a certified copy you may also bring your original transcript or records.
  • If the documents are not written in Dutch, English, French or German: a certified translation of the degree.
  • If the documents are not written in Dutch, English, French or German: a certified translation of the transcript of records.
  • Your passport (which should state the city or town where you were born)
  • A Curriculum Vitae (in Dutch or English).

After the intake meeting:

  • you will be able to use your DMA-portal;
  • you will be able to enroll in courses via Coachview;
  • your FGS and promotor will be informed that you attended the intake meeting;
  • you will receive confirmation of your registration by e-mail.

The intake meeting takes approximately one hour. We invite a maximum of ten candidates per meeting. You are welcome to bring your supervisor(s) along to the the intake meeting.

*Any Doctoral candidates who started their PhD at TU Delft before their Faculty Graduate School was established should also register at the University Graduate School. However, since they are near the end of their Doctoral Programme, they are not invited to the intake meeting. They must make an appointment for an alternative registration.  
The following FGS were established on 01-09-2011: AB+E, IDE and EEMCS. 
The following FGS were established on 01-01-2012: 3ME, AE, CEG, TNW, TPM (and the OTB department was added to AB+E).

Fees & Funding

In order to support the costs of our Doctoral Programmes, TU Delft requires a contribution. Generally, there are three ways to fund a Doctoral Programme; working at the university, bringing your own funding, or working for an external employer. Please refer to this page for more information.
