R1.A3 Making an impact with Open Science

Course description

This course will help you to increase your visibility and impact as a researcher by benefitting from the fact that science has moved from a closed model to an open model: Open Science. This trend allows you to substantially increase your readership by making your work freely accessible to a wider audience. Also, Open Science enables you to have impact by publishing your data. Along with this trend, Delft University of Technology and many other leading universities increasingly require open access for publications and research data. Important funders like NWO and the H2020 programme require that all articles that result from their funding are accessible to anyone around the world for free, as soon as they are published. Some funders also prefer data to be shared openly. As such, learning how to exploit the Open Science trend will simultaneously enable you to meet such formal requirements.

Within this open model, measuring the impact of scientific work increasingly through ‘altmetrics’ (alternative metrics) that go beyond traditional citation counts. Instead, your impact will be increasingly assessed by counting how often papers are, for example, viewed and downloaded and how often your work is mentioned in blogposts, how often it is liked or how often it is referred to in tweets. Developing an effective social media strategy that increases your scientific and societal impact is therefore essential. 

Course objectives

By the end of the course, you will be able to explain how the opening of science and rise of altmetrics impacts your work and, moreover, how you can turn these trends to your advantage. You will learn about the different forms of open access publishing, how to effectively store, manage and share research data, and how to employ social media to increase the visibility and impact of your research.

Teaching Methods

The course is largely online so that you are relatively flexible in where and when you go through the teaching materials. You need to pass several fun quizzes to check your understanding of the materials. Also, you will have to finish several practical assignments. For instance, you will have to analyse the open access policies of scientific journals in your field and write a data management plan for a research project. Also, you will be designing your own communication strategy and write a short weblog on your research. As such, the assignments do not only serve as a way to pass the course, but will directly contribute to your daily work. In addition, you will work together with three fellow students to evaluate your assignments. The course will be finished with an informal event in which you, all your fellow students and more experienced researchers can address questions and exchange ideas on the impact of open science and altmetrics on scientific practice.
