Offshore Wind Farm Technology: design, installation and operation

This course is offered online over 7 weeks, with an expected weekly workload of 4-6 hours. It focuses on how the various engineering disciplines integrate in the design and installation of offshore wind farms. At its core is a practical case study of the design, construction and operation of an offshore wind farm. Each learning week focuses on a particular discipline, examining issues and challenges such as external conditions, installation logistics, dynamics, grid integration, operation and maintenance.

After completing this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand how the various technical disciplines interact with one another.
  • Select the best options for developing and operating offshore wind farms.
  • Grasp how wind turbines are designed to handle various conditions, such as dynamic wind and wave and loadings.
  • Describe grid integration strategies for offshore wind turbines.
  • Understand operationaland maintenance strategies for offshore wind turbines and farms.
  • Cooperate more effectively with other technology partners active in the field and thus extend your professional network.

Aeroacoustics

This program is offered online and consists of 2 courses. Each course is 5 weeks long, with an expected weekly workload of 5-7 hours. It focuses on how to apply knowledge of aeroacoustics in a simple and effective way. In this online program you will learn how to reliably measure noise and develop noise reduction strategies to improve the aerodynamic design and performance of mechanical systems. This program includes special lectures given by leading companies, access to online tools and resources, and personalized feedback.

After completing this program, you will be able to:

  • Analyze fundamental aeroacoustic sources of noise and their aerodynamic origin.
  • Evaluate sources of noise in different mechanical systems.
  • Discuss and decide upon the most relevant acoustic parameters to be monitored and measured for a specific aerodynamic system.
  • Design a strategy to work within noise regulations without compromising aerodynamic performance.
  • Get acquainted with fundamental and advanced measurement techniques for aeroacoustics.
  • Design a simple experimental setup for investigating or isolating sources of noise.
  • Identify the most important aerodynamic parameters that affect noise generation (e.g. performance of the system and operating regimes) and the noise uncertainties in wind‑tunnel and in‑field measurements for aeroacoustics.

Urban Air Mobility

This course is offered online over 6 weeks, with an expected weekly workload of 5-6 hours. This course combines the multi‑disciplinary aspects of vehicle design and operation. It offers state‑of‑the‑art concepts related to design – from aerodynamics and aeroacoustics of propulsion systems to powering possibilities – and operational aspects – from vehicle control and stability to integration with the urban environment. Participants are given the option to specialize in one (or both) of these two fields.

After completing this program, you will be able to:

  • Categorize and compare different vehicle typologies, evaluating the requirements per mission, and anticipating the problems to be solved for each of them.
  • Estimate and predict the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance, and additional aspects of integration into urban environments, with the purpose of producing a complete vehicle design.
  • Evaluate the performance of the state‑of‑the‑art electric propulsion and fuel-cell technology in the context of UAM.
  • Evaluate flight control, trajectory optimization and manoeuvrability specific to UAM and its integration into the urban environment.
