D. Giannopoulos (Dimosthenis)

Biography

I was born and raised in Pyrgos, a small city in the southwestern part of Greece.

In 2008, I started studying mechanical engineering at the University of Patras. I obtained my diploma degree from the Department of Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics. During my studies, I developed a dissertation with title “Fabrication and characterization of solid state dye-sensitized solar cells’’.

In 2016, I continued my academic training with a Master of Science in Computational and Experimental Engineering and Advanced Materials at the University of Patras. My thesis work focused on the development of structural energy storage devices using graphene. I also had the opportunity to work as a researcher under the auspices of the EU-founded Program of the European Space Agency.

Current Project

From January 2019 I am PhD student at the Novel Aerospace Materials group of the Aerospace engineering faculty at TU Delft, working on the development of flexible and stretchable piezoelectric composites for biomechanical energy harvesting. The work is focused not only on materials development but also on their integration to produce a workable prototype. This project is in close collaboration with Adidas and aims to develop energy harvesting devices that can be integrated in on-body sensor modules to make it self-sustainable. My work is under the supervision of Prof.dr. W.A. Groen.
