Innovative material structures can be used to create new sensor systems for high-precision machines and instruments. The ability to sense (local, real-time) a wide variety of parameters provides insight in the behaviour of the machine or the process, and generates valuable information for customers and opportunities for optimization.

The concepts we propose in this project are based on engineered 3D material structures, which have unique and tailored-by-design properties. Specifically, we focus on 3D material structures which interact with elastic waves. We will research design and modelling methods, as well as industry-compatible manufacturing approaches for these material structures. The project focuses on two inspirational cases from the industry.
