Track: Physics for Health and Life

The Physics for Health and Life track is aimed at the application of physical methods in healthcare and for understanding processes taking place within the smallest units of life systems. The track deals with the development of new image acquisition and processing techniques as well as the quantitative analysis of two-, three- and four-dimensional images of the human body obtained through such systems for medical diagnosis and disease monitoring. The track also deals with state-of-the-art radiotherapy techniques, allowing you to apply physics and nanotechnology to explore and engineer biology and focus on the functioning of single cells in all their complexity down to the molecular level.

Course modules
Examples of elective modules related to this track are Imaging Systems, Acoustic Elastic and Electromagnetic Waves, Medical Imaging Signals and Systems, Advanced Digital Image Processing, Medical Physics of Photon and Proton Therapy, Radiological Health Physics, Biophysics, and Physics of Biological Systems: Mathematical modelling in Systems Biology.
Regardless of the track, the Applied Physics programme also includes mandatory mathematics and ethics modules, and a choice of general advanced physics modules.

Thesis project
You will carry out your Master’s thesis project in the department of Bionanoscience or Imaging Physics, or in the Medical Physics & Technology or Biomedical Imaging groups of the department of Radiation Science and Technology.

Thesis projects and electives linked to the bionanoscience department fit in the Casimir Pre-PhD special programme.

The programme and all modules are described in detail in the study guide.
