The Bioinformatics specialisation is part of the Master program in Computer Science offering a closer look into life science applications of informatics. Data acquisition has sky-rocketed in many biological and medical application domains and there is an imminent need for computational solutions to data capturing, data warehousing, data analysis and data mining. The flood of quantitative data combined with the complex nature of biological data and challenges in the data capturing provide challenges for the years to come. The main focus of the Bioinformatics specialisation is on data analysis, machine learning and modelling, which represent the unique expertise of the different research groups of the Delft Bioinformatics Lab at TU Delft. Interestingly, bioinformatics has also been a driving force for new fundamental computer science principles and the development of new informatics tools, such as string matching, data structures, and statistical methods.

The bioinformatics courses within the specialisation are focused on the algorithmic aspects of bioinformatics. Course-work applies these algorithmic aspects in applications ranging from human health, over industrial biotech, to plant genomics. Graduation projects can be done in any of the application domains that are active within the Delft Bioinformatics Group, often jointly with other life science research groups or with industry.

Because of the popularity of the Cyber security  programme, the number of students accepted into this special programme is limited. Acceptance depends on the student's previous academic performance and aptitude for cybersecurity. For the  Bioinformatics and Information Architecture special programme enrolment is possible until maximum capacity limited is reached. Students can indicate their interest in a special programme at the start of the programme.
