All MSc programmes at the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering are truly international in character. Over 20% of the MSc students is international and the programmes are completely English spoken. Participants in the programme can take advantage of the faculty’s many cooperations with leading design institutes around the world to gain international experience, e.g. through an exchange at one of the faculty’s 40 exchange partner universities.
Within the curriculum
Throughout the master programmes there are several courses that could be carried out (partly) abroad or in collaboration with an international party. The second year of the master programme offers opportunities for gaining international experience through the Joint Master Project and the Graduation Project.
For the Joint Master project, student teams are allowed to acquire their own assignment for a company, and six teams are allowed to participate in a Base-of-the-Pyramid project each semester, of which an example is shown below. For the Graduation project, students are required to arrange their own assignment, which can also take place within a company abroad.
Example of a Joint Master Project abroad
This video shows a a student movie of a Joint Master Project (JMP) in which students from 3 different Master programs (DFI, IPD and SPD) designed an affordable and desirable toilet shelter for the Cambodian BOP population - 2013
Furthermore, a self-arranged internships abroad of at least 8 weeks can be carried out as a 12 EC elective course.
You can also apply to go on one of the special TU Delft foreign-based programmes, for participating in courses, research, competitions, internships or exchanges abroad.
Outside the curriculum
Study association i.d yearly organizes international study trips trips ranging in intensity from just visiting museums, design schools and design agencies to doing research and design cases for companies.
Generally speaking, a lot is possible when it comes to gaining international experience, it just requires your own initiative. E.g. keep your eyes open for any teacher starting a (research)project or competition abroad, looking for students to participate.
