This MSc track combines Science Communication courses with courses in a science & technology subject related to your Bachelor’s programme, and allows you to tailor the programme to your own interests. The communication part of the programme comprises of courses that offer relevant theoretical knowledge, skills and insights in the field of science communication, including science journalism, high-tech marketing, psychology and sociology of collaboration. The main part of the programme is focused on bridging between science, technology and society through design. These courses will help you to bring science, technology, organisation and innovation management together in a real innovation practice and attune this process to the 21st century skilled professionals in collaborative networks.
The science & technology part will enrich and broaden your knowledge of a scientific or technological discipline. You will deepen your knowledge of and skills in a subject that is directly related to your Bachelor’s programme by taking courses at a Master’s level.
In order to create synergy, the science & technology and Science Communication parts can run in parallel. In the final phase of the programme, and in particular in the thesis, the domains can be integrated.
- 1-year programme
If you already hold a science & technology-based MSc degree, you can follow the Science Communication programme as a 1-year (12- to 15-month) programme, with a focus on communication subjects.
- 2-year programme
In this MSc programme, you combine 60 ECTS of your science & technology subjects with 60 ECTS in Science Communication. For the science & technology part, you draw up your own programme. Courses you may choose from are described in the study guides of the various TU Delft Master's Programmes, but can also be followed at other (technical) universities. The list needs to be approved by the academic counsellor of the science & technology Master's programme as well as by the SEC programme coordinator (firstname.lastname@example.org).
- 3-year programme (double degree)
Students are offered the opportunity to obtain a double degree (MSc + MSc = 180 ECTS).
This three-year programme is intended for students who are interested in acquiring knowledge and skills in communication, but also wish to obtain a degree in a technological programme. For these students, the theses for the technological MSc and the communication programme are preferably integrated into a single graduation thesis for both degrees. For the procedure for seeking permission to pursue a double degree from both Boards of Examiners, please contact the SEC programme coordinator (email@example.com).
TU Delft does not charge different fees for enrolment in a second study or degree programme similar in level of the degree you already obtained, see also Tuition Fee & Finances.
Science Communication core courses
Composing a programme proposal
If you choose to do the 2- or 3-year programme, you will have to compose a programme proposal containing the courses you would like to combine with the Science Communication courses. This science & technology part of the programme should consist of the following four elements:
- Master’s courses: 20-30 ECTS
- Design, design methodology and modelling: 5-10 ECTS
- Ethics, history and general knowledge subjects: 5-10 ECTS
- Research: 20 ECTS
The SEC programme coordinator and academic counsellor can help you compose the programme proposal and a study plan.
Although you will have the opportunity while enrolled in the programme to study or do an internship abroad for up to 3 months (maximum of 12 EC), such study exchanges are not common.
