Delft Improv Group (DIG)

Improvisation is all about being spontaneous. The things that occur on stage are not the interpretation of a script but are created on the spot while performing. In this form of theatre – often comedy – the actors perform scenes and/or stories based on one or more suggestions from the audience. Improvisational theatre is not only an art form in its own right; it is also used as a technique to prepare or rehearse actors for film, television, and theatre productions.

Delft Improv Group (DIG) offers improv sessions for players of all levels, in collaboration with X. The first two sessions you join are completely free but if you want to continue after that you are required to become a member of the association. This is to make sure that you can try out improv before committing to join the association. So, if you’re interested, just drop by at one of the sessions!

The improv sessions, called “improv jams”, are being held every Thursday from 19:00-21:30 in the room “Rhythm” at X. During each session, the fundamental rules of improv are mentioned, not only for the understanding of the first-timers, but to also drill it into the heads of experienced members. The best way to get better from there is to just keep playing, which is exactly what the sessions are meant for.

DIG offers you the opportunity to hone your improv skills in an international environment with members from very different backgrounds, and with different levels of improv theatre experience. The group also performs shows twice every three months (roughly), thereby providing several opportunities to play for an audience as well.

Projects

The weekly improv jams

Typically, a jam starts with some chatting and welcoming new people to join and after that some mental and physical warm-up games. Then, there are some exercises to practice with improv theory and, after that, the rest of the jam is dedicated to playing various games involving improvised scenes. The sessions are organised and led by the members of the DIG board.

The improv jams provide fun and effective way to practice theatre and comedy skills as well as skills in public speaking, team building and English speaking.

The shows

Shows are typically held in the theatre hall at X and sometimes at different venues in collaboration with third parties. The shows offer members an opportunity to show off their learned improv skills to friends and family and allow people that don’t like doing improv themselves to enjoy improv in Delft from the audience perspective.

Other activities

Besides the regular programme of jams and shows, (board)members like to organise extra activities such as boardgame nights, making sketches or short movies, outdoor improv, RPG sessions or dinner parties.
