VSV Leonardo da Vinci

Established in 1945, the Society of Aerospace Engineering Students ‘Leonardo da Vinci’, has grown into a mature society. It organizes many activities for its members, more than 95% of all students at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. The faculty is constantly growing, and growing strongly. Currently there are approximately 2800 members, making the Society of Aerospace Engineering Students the largest society of its kind in the Benelux. The Society aims to serve the moral and material interests of aerospace students in all aspects of student life. Since 1945, this has been achieved by organizing a wide variety of activities, mostly in the field of aerospace engineering. To accomplish this, 28 committees and 4 departments organise many different activities like guest lectures, excursions, a study tour, drinks and parties. All of this happens under the supervision of 7 students, who are a full-time member of the board of our society and put their study on hold for a year to fully dedicate themselves to the society.

Within the faculty of Aerospace engineering the VSV makes sure the students have a vote in the educational program and functions like a quality control group. Also, the VSV sells the books needed in the curriculum at the lowest price possible. Besides the educational activities the VSV also sees it as its duty to let her members get acquainted with the career segment of the Aerospace sector. In order to do so, the VSV organises workshop and excursions, and the Space and Aviation department both organise a 5 day trip within Europe, to visit all sorts of companies related to their branch. Also there is one big study tour every year, where 30 students visit companies far abroad (like Dubai and the United States) for 3 to 4 weeks in a row. The VSV also regularly organises symposia with world known speakers like Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon, and Jean-Jacques Dordain, the Director General of ESA. These symposia are of high quality and are visited by many students, scientists and the top of the Aerospace industry. These symposia inspire students to take on new challenges in aerospace. Besides, it gives an inside into how the aerospace industry is putting theory into practice. Besides organising all this, the VSV also publishes. Every year we publish a yearbook, which contains all the reports and pictures off the activities organized the last year. Besides this yearbook, the VSV also publishes a full colour magazine, the Leonardo Times, which appears four times a year and has a circulation of over four thousand copies. This magazine contains technical articles, company profiles and other Aerospace related material.

Study tour

Each year the society of Aerospace students the VSV ‘Leonardo da Vinci’, of the of the Delft Univeristy of Technology, organizes a study tour taking students to countries around the world. During the study tour a wide range of company and institute visits are organized, allowing the students to familiarize themselves with the local aerospace industry and technology. Along with the company visits, cultural activities will enhance the participant’s study tour experience. The tour aims at contributing to the globalization that is ever more present in the aerospace industry. To achieve this, participants are given the opportunity to acquaint themselves with foreign companies, to meet aerospace students from across the world, and to familiarize themselves with different cultural settings.

Symposium

The annual VSV Symposium alternates between a space and an aviation symposium. It gets over 500 visitors and during the day, participants can participate in workshops, visit the innovation floor or listen to interesting and fascinating speakers and panels.

Multiple Day Excursion

This is annual one week trip to an European country. In this week, a group of about 20 students visit leading space and aviation-companies in that country. Next to that, there is also plenty of room to explore the culture of the particular location.

Yearbook and Quarterly Magazine

Every year we publish a yearbook, which contains all the reports and pictures off the activities organized the last year. Besides this yearbook, the VSV also publishes a full colour magazine, the Leonardo Times, which appears four times a year and has a circulation of over four thousand copies. Aerospace Diversity Day

It is no secret that diversity is not the strongest point of the aerospace industry. To discuss this topic, and highlight its importance, the VSV is organizing the yearly Aerospace Diversity Day, with workshops, speakers and panelists on dealing with diversity.

Faculty Party Airbase

Two party areas, more than 800 visitors and an amazing line-up. This combination makes the biggest and most awesome party of the VSV! After several years Airbase has grown to be a true phenomenon within Delft.

Wintersport

Every year the VSV 'Leonardo da Vinci' will leave on a skitrip for a week full of sun, snow and Après-ski with more than 80 students.

Air show

VSV 'Leonardo da Vinci' and Breda International Airport organize the 'VSV Breda Airshow', which is be one of the largest private airshows in the Netherlands. The last edition in 2017 had more than 15,000 visitors.

Lunch Lectures, Excursions, Workshops and Interviews

Almost every week, there are lunch lectures, workshops, interviews and excursions to e.g. Schiphol, LVNL, the Dutch Airforce, Airbus DS, ESA ESTEC.

De Delftse Bedrijvendagen

Space Department

The Space Department (RVD) is the oldest department of the VSV 'Leonardo da Vinci'. The RVD promotes astronautics among students and employees by organising lectures, excursions and other astronautic related activities. Approximately two times per period the RVD organises a lecture about a space-related subject. The guest lecturers come from all over Europe, but mostly from the Benelux. Lectures were given about for example MarsOne and Galileo. Next to that, every period the RVD organises an excursion to a space-related company or exposition, sometimes even abroad. The goal of these excursions is to have a look inside a company, where you normally are not allowed to be. Examples are excursions to the European Astronaut Center in Germany and the A Human Adventure Exposition in Jaarbeurs Utrecht. Biannually in July, the Multiple Day Excursion (MDE) is organized. This is a one week trip to a European country. In this week, a group of about 20 students visit leading space-companies in that country. Of course, there is also plenty of room to explore the culture of the particular location. Finally, once every two years the RVD organizes a symposium about a space-related theme (this alternates witch the LVD, which organizes a symposium in years during which the RVD doesn't organize one).

Aviation Department

If your hearts skips a beat when you see an aircraft flying overhead, the Aviation Department (LVD) certainly has a lot to offer you within the VSV ‘Leonardo da Vinci’. The main goal of the LVD is to organise lectures, excursions and other activities that are all related to aviation. Every study period the LVD aims to organise a lecture held by someone can tell students and employees something new and exciting in the field of aviation. Think about for example an Airbus employee who focuses on structural certification, or an F35 test engineer. Apart from these lectures the LVD also organises excursions to different aeronautical companies and events, such as the Belgian Air Force Days or the LVNL, the Dutch Air Traffic Control. Students can take a look behind the scenes of different companies, to get a great idea of all the opportunities that there are in aviation. A major Multiple Day Excursion, the MDE, is organised once every two years at the start of the summer, in July. In a trip that lasts one whole week about 20 students travel to a country within Europe to visit different companies that play an important role in the aviation industry. These visits can vary from getting a tour at Airbus in France, to visiting Lockheed Martin in the UK. Just like the Space Department, the LVD organizes a symposium every two years.

Master Department

‘Apollo’ For students in the last phase of their studies there is the Master Department ‘Apollo’. Focussing on master students ‘Apollo’ organises activities to help them orientate on their future careers. These activities include lunch lectures (with lunch), in-house days and application trainings. Furthermore Apollo organises the Case Tour and Business Tour every other year. As aerospace students are sought after in almost all sectors ‘Apollo’ not only organises aerospace related activities, but also activities related to for example offshore and consultancy. So if you are a master (or late bachelor) student and you want to orientate on your career, make sure to come to our activities!

Aerospace Diversity Department

Formerly responsible for organizing the Revolutionary Aerospace Women event, the committee has now diversified itself, organizing the Aerospace Diversity Day.
Faculty bar ‘de Atmosfeer’ The faculty bar "de Atmosfeer" ("the Atmosphere") is run by students of the VSV 'Leonardo da Vinci' and located within the faculty of Aerospace Engineering. Every Wednesday from 17:30 - 00:30 and Friday from 16:30 - 21:00 the bar is opened. This cheerful place is furthermore used for graduation drinks, events of the VSV 'Leonardo da Vinci' and drinks for faculty staff members. VSV Café "de Atmosfeer" is managed by a group of 6 students - the management of de Atmosfeer.
