Visum & Verblijfsvergunning
If you are a non-EU and non-EFTA student at TU Delft, you may need a MVV visa (entry visa) and/or a Residence Permit for Study in order to study in the Netherlands. TU Delft will apply for the MVV Visa and/or Residence Permit for Study on your behalf at the IND (the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Services). It is not possible for you as a student to apply yourself.
Conditions
In order to apply for your MVV Visa and/or Residence Permit for Study, you need to fulfil the following conditions:
- You have been (conditionally) admitted to TU Delft as a student.
- You are able to demonstrate your financial solvability by making a guarantee payment (i.e. tuition fee and/or costs of living for the first year of degree programme or duration of the exchange programme; current rates are published here).
- Your passport is valid for at least 6 months after the start of your studies.
If you have studied in the Netherlands before, a different application process may apply.
MVV Visa
The MVV Visa is a document that both allows you to enter the Netherlands and stay legally for a duration of 90 days. All non-EU and non-EFTA nationals need a MVV Visa to enter the Netherlands as well as a Residence Permit for Study.
If you are a national from the UK, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, USA, Vatican City, you are exempt from the MVV Visa. You just need a Residence Permit for Study.
If you are a non-EU and non-EFTA national, but you hold a valid Residence Permit for another European country in the Schengen area, you are also exempt from the MVV Visa, provided that the permit is valid at least till the day of arrival in the Netherlands.
Residence Permit for Study
If you are a non-EU and non-EFTA national, you will always need a Dutch Residence Permit for Study. The permit allows you to reside legally in The Netherlands during your studies.
Please note: it is not possible to change a Dutch tourist visa (category C visa) or another non-Dutch visa into a Dutch Residence Permit for Study.
Bringing family to the Netherlands
TU Delft only arranges MVV Visas and Residence Permits to admitted students. If you want to bring your partner or family for a period longer than 90 days click here; and click here for a short stay of a of maximum 90 days.

- Follow the instructions as indicated in the Financial Letter.

As a non-EU/non-EFTA student, you are required to undergo the TB test within three months after the start of your study programme, unless your nationality is stated in this list. We will start reviewing your documents from April, after you have met the payment requirement. If your documents do not suffice, you will be asked to submit these anew. Therefore, we kindly ask you to check all fields and signatures before submitting your file, to limit further action on both our sides.
In order to ensure the validity of your MVV Visa during the required period, TU Delft will start submitting the applications at the IND from the end of May. The MVV Visa and/or Residence Permit application may take up to 4 weeks. You will be notified about the outcome via email.
We advise you to book your travel to the Netherlands after your MVV Visa (if applicable) and Residence Permit for Study have been approved; and after you have found housing for your stay.

If you are an incoming student that only requires a Residence Permit (so no MVV Visa) , you need to supply your biometric details at the IND in the Netherlands. Afterwards, your Residence Permit card will be created. After submitting your biometrics, it takes around two weeks before your residence permit card is ready for collection. You can schedule your individual biometrics appointment through this link.
If you are subject to an MVV Visa, you submit your biometric details during your MVV Visa appointment at the Dutch embassy / consulate general. If there is any need to resubmit your details, you will be notified by TU Delft.
-
At this moment, there are no central days scheduled where you can collect your residence permit card. If you still have to collect your card, you can schedule an individual appointment at the IND office in the Hague, once you receive notice from TU Delft that your card is ready for collection. You can schedule your individual collection appointment through this link. After collecting your residence permit, please submit PDF with a copy of the front and back of your card to TU Delft via contactcentre-esa@tudelft.nl.

As a non-EU/EFTA student, you are required to undergo the TB test within three months after the start of your study programme, unless your nationality is stated in this list. TB test results from your home country or another country are not accepted in the Netherlands.
The TB screening is executed by the GGD Haaglanden and requires a €55 fee to be paid by debit card or credit card. TU Delft has to inform the GGD of your obligation to undergo a TB Screening. With this information, the GGD schedules your appointment. You will receive a confirmation of your appointment from TU Delft – it is not possible to change the date or time of the appointment.

Once you reside in the Netherlands, there are several requirements that you are obliged to meet for the entire duration of your residence, as determined by the IND. Among others, there are requirements for registration, insurance and minimum study progress (MoMi). You’ll find all requirements here.
As long as you meet these requirements, your residence permit is valid for the nominal duration of your study programme and three months after. If you do not comply with these conditions, your residence permit will be revoked by the IND. TU Delft cannot change these regulations nor make an exception.

If you are a prospective student with a non-EU/EEA nationality who has previously studied in the Netherlands, please follow the relevant situational instructions with its own deadlines hereafter.

You have studied in the Netherlands before but have not yet received a Dutch degree:

please refer here for details relevant to your situation.

For more information on current fees, please refer to this page (including the ‘extra costs’).
