Governmental benefits
This section contains information on a variety of governmental benefits in the Netherlands one might like to know about. Links are included in case more information is needed. For more general information about these benefits, see: how do benefits work.
As an employee of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) you are entitled to maternity, birth leave and parental leave based on the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) and the Work and Care Act (WAZO). As such, you can take a period of leave so you can spend more time raising your child(ren) in combination with work.

Do you live in a rented house in the Netherlands? If so, you may be entitled to the rent benefit (huurtoeslag). This is a contribution towards your rental costs.

The Dutch government provides a healthcare allowance called ‘zorgtoeslag’. If you have a Dutch healthcare insurance, you can apply for this allowance. The amount of this allowance depends on your income and on your household size (i.e. whether you are single, a single parent or a couple). The amount is decided by the government and changes annually.

The child benefit (kinderbijslag) is a governmental allowance covering the expenses of raising a child. You are eligible for this allowance if you live and/or work in the Netherlands (or abroad but employed by a Dutch employer) and have a child or children under 18 years of age.
The child benefit is handled by the Social Security Office (Sociale Verzekeringsbank – SVB). They will contact you about applying for the benefit within two to four weeks following the registration of your child at the municipality (gemeente). If not you have not received a letter from the SVB a month after the registration, you can apply for the benefit on this page: child benefit.

The Dutch government reimburses a substantial portion of the cost of childcare. The childcare benefit is called ‘kinderopvangtoeslag’. The amount you are entitled to depends on several criteria, such as the number of children, family income and the working hours of parents.
