FAQ

It is not possible to make an appointment with a member of the Board of Examiners. However it is advised to consult the academic counsellors about your request first, to discuss the options and possible outcomes.  

If you need to discuss your personal situation (illness, disabilities or other special circumstances), you need to contact the academic counsellor. 

You can send your request via email to: boardofexaminers-ae@tudelft.nl. 

In general, the Board of Examiners meets once a month (limited availability during the summer holidays). Dates can be found on the website of the Board of Examiners. 

Requests will be discussed during the monthly meeting of the Board of Examiners. Requests must be received by email at least 10 working days before the meeting. 

The Board of Examiners will render a decision with respect to a student’s request within 40 working days after the request is received or, if the request is submitted during an academic holiday or within a period of three weeks prior to an academic holiday, within 40 working days after the end of that holiday. The Board of Examiners may postpone making a decision for a maximum period of 10 working days. The student will be informed in writing of any postponement before the end of the period referred to in the first sentence.  

Please note that the Board has monthly meetings, so you will only be notified after the meeting took place. In general, you can expect to receive the decision within 2 or 3 weeks after the meeting date.

The Regulations (TER, IR, RG) for either the BSc and MSc are merged in one document and can be found on the student portal under regulations BSc and MSc.

A student can receive the designation Cum Laude if the following requirements have been met:

• Weighted average of the BSc courses (150 ECTS) is at least 8.500. The grade of the DSE is included, grades of the minor are not included.

Note: students who started the BSc programme before 1 September 2019, the weighted average of the results in terms of credits from the subjects, including the Bachelor’s graduation project must be at least 8.00; passes and exemptions will not be taken into consideration; the grades of the minor are not included in the average for the Cum Laude.

• The duration of study, that is, the period between the student’s enrolment on the programme and his or her taking the final examination, must not have exceeded a period of 42 months. Starting date of the BSc is September 1^st.
• The number of credits for exemptions may not exceed 40 ECTS.

The Cum Laude regulation has been laid down in the Rules and Guidelines of the Board of Examiners (year of graduation).   

Additionally: the duration of study for a BSc Cum Laude designation

If a part of the programme was completed before official enrolment in the programme, for instance in the form of exemptions, as part of an exchange programme, or because of the so-called ‘Zachte knip’ the maximum allowed duration will be reduced by one month for every 5 ECTS completed. The following scheme will be used

• 1 to 4 EC: no month reduction
• 5 to 9 EC: one month reduction
• 10-14 EC: 2 months reduction etc.

Note: students are required to calculate the weighted average by themselves based on the amount of ECTS that is awarded for each course.  

A student can receive the designation Cum Laude if the following requirements have been met:

• Weighted average of the MSc courses is at least 8.500. The grade of the MSc thesis is not included.

Note: students who started the MSc programme before 1 September 2019, the weighted average of the results in terms of credits from the subjects, not including the Master thesis project must be at least 8.00; passes and exemptions will not be taken into consideration.

• The grade of the MSc thesis is at least 9.0.
• The duration of study, that is, the period between the student’s enrolment on the programme and his or her taking the final examination, must not have exceeded the period of 30 months. For students starting the MSc before September 1, 2016, the starting date of the MSc programme is the first examination date (toetsdatum). For students starting on or after September 2016, the starting date of the MSc programme is the date of enrolment in the MSc. For all students, the date of completion of the MSc programme is the MSc Thesis defence date.
• The number of credits for exemptions may not exceed 26 ECTS.

Additionally: the duration of study for a MSc Cum Laude designation

Students that do not comply with the requirements, can submit a well-motivated (supported by official statements) request once they are graduated (and the requirements to be eligible for the cum laude designation are known). The Board of Examiners will not take decisions in advance. 

The GPA is the weighted average of all grades during your BSc or your MSc. The minor is also part of the GPA in the Bachelor (although the grades of the minor don’t count for a possible Cum Laude). The weight is the number of credits.

In case you followed your minor abroad, your pass grades will be registered with a ‘V’ voldoende, and don’t count either for the GPA and for a possible Cum Laude.

Note: students can request an official transcript including notification of their GPA at the Service desk of our faculty or at Contact Centre ESA (contactcentre-esa@tudelft.nl).   

All BSc courses which are part of a module (components) are graded in decimals. The final mark of the module is rounded to the nearest half.  A result for a component may only be included in the determination of the final mark if it is at least a 5.0.

All MSc courses are graded in halves.

Example: a grade 5.8 for a module will be rounded up to a 6.0, a 5.7 will be rounded off to a 5.5. To pass a module, the minimum grade is 6.0.

The grading rules are further described in the Implementation Regulations and the Rules and Guidelines. 

In case you followed your minor and/or MSc electives abroad, your pass grades will be registered with a ‘V’ voldoende, and don’t count either for the GPA and for a possible Cum Laude. Also the actual external grades of the courses that have been completed abroad will be registered in MyTUDelft and will be visible on your diploma supplement but not on your transcript. You can check this in MyTUDelft by creating a file overview and click on full results (note: overview details are only visible in Dutch).

The pass/fail conversion and credit conversion has been determined by the Board of Examiners. 

First, it is expected to attend the review session of the exam, and to discuss any objections with the responsible lecturer.

If you have discussed your situation with your lecturer, and you did not come to an understanding, you are entitled to appeal against this to the Examination Appeals Board, in accordance with Article 7.61 of the Higher Education and Research Act (WHW). An appeal must be lodged within six weeks of its publication in MyTUDelft. Such appeals must be submitted in writing to the Examination Appeals Board.

All the requirements for the Minor abroad can be found in the TU Delft studyguide under course code AE3060. Every year in December/January there is an application deadline for all available exchange places at our partner universities for the next academic year. All Bachelor and Master students from the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering can apply for those places. A selection will be made after the application deadline. In case you have failed courses abroad, you need to find substitute courses at TU Delft as soon as possible. Because the exchange period has ended, you will now have to meet the regulations of a self-composed minor. You need to fill out the ‘self-composed minor form’ and send an official request to the BoE, who will assess the proposed courses.

The Exchange office can offer advice on the courses possibilities and whether your course selection match the courses (theme) you obtained abroad. Please visit them during open office hours. 

If you want to compose a self-composed minor, there are general requirements:

• the courses must be cohesive and interrelated by one theme
• courses must be at third year BSc level
• it is allowed to take a maximum of 15 ECTS from 2^nd year BSc courses or 1^st year courses if well motivated, to close a gap in pre-knowledge in other fields than Aerospace Engineering.
• no overlap with compulsory courses
• 30 ECTS
• no MSc courses are allowed

Please send the self-composed minor form to the Board of Examiners by email at least two months before the start of the first course. 

As a rule, students may only include one minor in their BSc exam programme. Students are allowed to follow additional TU Delft courses, but those courses will be registered under ‘overig’, not counting towards their exam programme and only visible on a transcript which can be requested at the Service desk of the faculty. 

Students who obtained academic credits at another university or in a different TU Delft programme can be eligible for course exemptions under specific conditions. When you consider yourself eligible for a course exemption, you must submit an exemption request to the Board of Examiners.

Note: only requests of students that are already enrolled and admitted to the Aerospace Engineering programme will be taken into consideration.

Students who wish to request a change in their core and/or profile courses are required to send an AE-4 form to the Board of Examiners (boardofexaminers-ae@tudelft.nl) for approval. 

Students who wish to request a change in their electives are required to request the change in mystudyplanning.tudelft.nl, which will be assessed and signed by the track coordinator.

If you want to do an Individual Double Degree of the MSc programme, you have to hand in a motivation letter and a complete list of courses at the Board of Examiners of AE.  You can find the application form and the procedure at the Student portal: Forms

By fraud is meant all cases in which you suggest that something is your own work (consciously or unconsciously, intentionally or unintentionally) when in fact that is not the case. For example: copying, committing plagiarism, handing in another students’ work as your own, piggybacking and using fictitious research data. Whenever a student is suspected of having committed fraud, the matter will be dealt by the Board of Examiners. The student will be invited for a hearing during the meeting of the Board of Examiners. The Board of Examiners will determine if fraud has been committed, and if so, a sanction will be imposed.

The sanctions depend on the gravity of the case, and can vary from a reprimand, an exclusion from the examination or form one or more examination periods and can even lead to a complete exclusion of the study programme.

The possible sanctions are in detail described in the Rules and Guidelines of the Board of Examiners (year of graduation).

Registration for the degree audit and the application for the degree certificate must be submitted to the Student Programme Administration (SPA-LR@tudelft.nl) no later than 20 working days before the degree audit in question is to be held.  You have to fill in the Exam Application Form (see Student portal -> Forms). 

The examination meeting is a virtual meeting where the Student Programme administration (SPA) proposes you for graduation and the Board of Examiners will check whether you have fulfilled all the degree requirements. During this meeting it is determined whether or not you have passed for the degree programme and if you are eligible for the diploma. Afterwards, the Board of Examiners will inform about the outcome by email. This email includes the date when the diploma ceremony will take place.

It is the responsibility of the student to check when examinations take place and plan accordingly.

Exams cannot be rescheduled. In case of personal circumstances, please visit the academic counsellors.

The project sessions from the first and second year project (BSc,) are mandatory. Students are allowed to miss a maximum of 2 project sessions per period for the project itself, for example due to illness.
