At the Multi-Actor Systems department (MAS), we do transdisciplinary research focusing on understanding, explaining, and changing complex sociotechnical systems to address grand societal challenges, such as climate change, cybersecurity and the energy transition. Our research is based on a joint fundamental understanding of such systems grounded in Governance, Policy Analysis and System Engineering & Design, supported by methodological excellence.

The department consists of a group of around 120 researchers, including PhD candidates and postdocs, with diverse research backgrounds from both the social and engineering sciences. As a department, we are convinced that challenges in complex sociotechnical systems need to be studied from multiple perspectives, including those of key stakeholders, to truly understand the intrinsic dynamics and complexities of such systems and to be able to invoke positive change in such systems.
