Dr. A.Y. (Aaron) Ding
Dr. Aaron Ding is leading the Cyber-Physical Intelligence (CPI) Lab in the Dept. Engineering Systems and Services at TU Delft. As a tenured Associate Professor of TU Delft and Associate Professor (permanent) in Computer Science at the University of Helsinki, he has over 15 years of R&D experience across EU, UK and USA. Prior to TU Delft, he has worked at TU Munich with Joerg Ott, at Columbia University with Henning Schulzrinne, at University of Cambridge with Jon Crowcroft. He obtained undergrad MSc and PhD all with distinctions from the Department of Computer Science (Linux birthplace) at the University of Helsinki. His PhD is supervised by Prof. Sasu Tarkoma and Prof. Jon Crowcroft at Cambridge. As funded by Nokia Foundation, vital part of his PhD programme is completed physically at University of Cambridge and at Columbia University in New York.
Dr. Ding is currently Associate Editor for ACM Transactions on Internet of Things (TIOT) and IEEE OJ-ITS. He has served on conference chairing committee for ACM SIGCOMM, ACM MobiCom, ACM UbiComp, ACM MobiSys, ACM CoNEXT and ACM HotNets. In leading research agenda for the rising domain of Edge AI, he hosted internationally renowned Dagstuhl and Lorentz Workshops to drive the future development. His Lorentz Workshop in 2021 is awarded 4TU Grant for creating a scientific community within the Netherlands to tackle the unique challenges of edge computing and unlocking the value of edge computing in research and education.
Dr. Ding is the founder of ACM EdgeSys, a successful series that have gathered substantial community contributions in terms of keynotes, panels, TPC and technical papers from North America, Europe, and Asia, including Google, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, IBM, Siemens, Nokia, Ericsson, MIT, Berkeley, Princeton, Columbia, Yale, Toronto, Cambridge and Oxford.
At TU Delft, Dr. Ding is invited to serve on TU Delft Works Council (OR) as Standing Committee. He also serves on the Executive Committee for Power Web Institute since 2019, and as Faculty Master Graduation Coordinator for ICT (10.2018~03.2021).
Research & funding
Dr. Ding is awarded EU funding as Consortium Director (€5M) and Principal Investigator (€1.1M) by leading several international and national R&D projects (H2020, Marie Curie ITN, German DAAD, EIT Digital, Tekes Finland) in tight collaboration with industrial companies such as Nokia, Ericsson, Intel, Deutsche Telekom, Broadcom, Telia, Elisa, NEC and F-Secure. His research focuses on Edge AI solutions for cyber-physical systems in smart health, mobility and energy domains. Through interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research across science, engineering and design disciplines, he has been developing system solutions for the emerging large-scale AIoT deployment, self-driving vehicles and edge analytic services. Different from the cloud-centric approach, his research investigates how to harness and consolidate the power of the distributed computing resources that are deployed at the network edge to reinforce cyber-physical systems in terms of performance, energy efficiency, trust, usability, security and resilience.
In his newly awarded H2020 SPATIAL (€5M, 2021-2024) and Marie Curie ITN (€4M, 2020-2024) projects, his group is joining force with strong consortium of IBM, Fraunhofer, Telefonica, NEC, F-Secure, UvA, EUR, UCD, KTH, TU Wien to develop innovative technologies for sustainable and trustworthy Edge AI. As a co-founder of FCN, he has initiated the series to promote collaborations between top European and Asian research institutes, including Cambridge, Helsinki, London, Munich, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, MPI, EPFL, HKUST, Tsinghua, Peking, Fudan and CAS.
For his research contributions to mobile edge computing with 60+ peer reviewed journal and conference publications, Dr. Ding's work has received best paper awards and recognition from ACM SIGCOMM, ACM EdgeSys, ACM SenSys CCIoT, and IEEE INFOCOM. He was also awarded "Staff Member of the Year" in Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. Dr. Ding is a two-time recipient of the esteemed Nokia Foundation Scholarships.
