D. (David) Paulus

Profile

David is a PhD researcher in the Organization & Governance Section. From 2017-2018 he implemented a project that researched how open humanitarian data (HDX, IATI, Kobo) can inform localized disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaption (CCA) initiatives. From 2014-2017 he worked for the United Nations University on ICT-supported institutional development and capacity building projects on DRR and CCA. He holds a MSc degree in Information Systems. During his studies he worked at the Fraunhofer Institute for Human Factors and Technology Management and the German Agency for International Cooperation.

Research

David researches how data analysis and decision-making can be improved in humanitarian crisis response. His focus is on cognitive and data biases and possible bias mitigation strategies. He uses an inter-disciplinary approach combining computer science with psychology and organization science. His main research methods are interviews, document analysis, online and workshop experiments, and statistical analysis. His case study is the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
