Dr. L. (Laurens) Rook

Profile

Laurens Rook is Assistant Professor at the Technology, Policy and Management Faculty of Delft University of Technology. He received his Ph.D. from the Rotterdam School of Management, and his bachelor and master’s degrees from the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. He also obtained a bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from the College of Art & Design of Rotterdam. His art works are in the national collection of Ireland and in the Municipal Archives of Rotterdam.

Research

Laurens’s research centers on applying behavioral theories and methodologies to Information Systems research. He studies how persuasive technologies enable users to make better choices, and change detrimental (e-commerce and energy consumption) behaviors for the better. In close collaboration with researchers from Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Technical University Vienna and the Rotterdam School of Management, he conducts empirical (live-) user studies that combine experimental research designs with the proactive recommender systems and analytical tools of computer science.

Using Persuasive technology and Big Data analytics to Reduce Consumer Energy Consumption

This research project by Laurens Rook, Markus Zanker, Rebekka Aigner and Wolfgang Ketter shows how a persuasive technology intervention on a smart meter support website enabled households in an Austrian city to reduce their energy consumption for a longer time period. The research project with its persuasive technology intervention was featured in the 2016 Delft Research Exhibition in the Library of the Delft University of Technology. It will be presented again at the upcoming 2017 Delft Research Exhibition
