Inter-temporal Justice for Resilience

Increasing resilience across generations.

TOPICS:

Developing and evaluating policies that deal with climate change is challenging for decision-makers, because of the long-term and global consequences of their decisions. Recent court rulings such as the Shell ruling have stressed our obligation towards future generations, and have pushed to accelerate climate adaptation. Conventional methods that are based on (static) discount factors are not equipped to adequately integrate these concerns. Therefore, this project aims to provide concrete tools for policy makers to integrate such long-term considerations of intergenerational justice into policy assessment. To this end, we combine concepts from decision theory such as of irreversibility and flexibility with ethics and justice principles.
