Weefsels, cellen en eiwitten onder de microscoop bekijken helpt ons om ziektes te voorkomen en bestrijden. Daarvoor moeten we heel precies de afmetingen van de biologische structuur kunnen bepalen. Maar zo’n biologisch preparaat kan onder de lichtmicroscoop platter lijken dan het werkelijk is. Onderzoekers van de TU Delft hebben nu voor het eerst aangetoond dat deze vervorming niet constant is, in tegenstelling tot waar veel wetenschappers decennialang vanuit gegaan zijn. De doorbraak, gepubliceerd in Optica, bevestigt een verwachting van Nobelprijswinnaar Stefan Hell uit de jaren 90. Met een online rekentool en software kan elke onderzoeker nu de juiste diepte van een biologisch preparaat achterhalen.

Alesandra Placzek has just started at the ImPhys biocluster as a bio-technician/biolab supervisor aiming at providing experimental support to a couple of different projects and being involved in lab managerial tasks at the same time.

Jianyao Jin will help to develop a better understanding of electron matter interactions in the context of scanning electron microscopy. He will work under supervision of Kees Hagen.

TU Delft researcher Dr. Martin Verweij and USP researcher Dr. Theo Pavan were awarded the SPRINT grant to explore potential collaboration in the field of ultrasound imaging. Martin Verweij and Djalma dos Santos (PhD student) participated in a collaborative exchange facilitated by the São Paulo Researchers in International Collaboration (SPRINT) program.

Aurèle Adam is one of the award winners to receive the annual Open Education Ambassador Award during Open Education Week. The award praises teachers as figureheads of open education.

Loek Andriessen started his thesis for the Nanobiology Masters in the lab of Hylkje Geertsema under the supervision of Myron Hensgens. We are trying to understand the spatial organization of the cell nucleus. Specifically, we investigate the distribution of nuclear lamin proteins using DNA-PAINT. The focus of his project is on investigating local differences in lamin protein distribution in 3D.

Na een recordvlucht van 57 dagen, 7 uur en 38 minuten boven Antarctica voltooide NASA’s ballontelescoop GUSTO haar missie met een parachutelanding op het ijs. De missie was ontworpen voor 55 dagen in de lucht. GUSTO heeft spectra verzameld van gas- en stofwolken in onze Melkweg en een naburig sterrenstelsel met ver-infrarood camera’s, ontworpen door SRON en TU Delft.

Co Kadijk will be doing his thesis project on Focusing functions for photoacoustic imaging, to account for strong reflectors in the medium without artifacts, with the guidance of Koen van Dongen and Joost van der Neut.
