Stoll CMS 530 flatbed knitting machine
E14 gauge (14 needles per inch). Total working width 1.27 m.
The Stoll 530 is a fully programmable industrial flatbed knitting machine. The recent development of high quality conductive yarns which are able to be used in an industrial knitting machine opens up a new scala of opportunities for integrating sensors and actuators in everyday garments in a natural and unobtrusive way.
In our group we intend to use the machine in the following research projects
- All-textile sensors: How can we knit garments with embedded stretch sensors? How does the response depend on stitch structure and yarn pre-tension. Application areas: revalidation feedback of arm, knee and fingers; posture monitoring; limb and finger motion detection for VR
- Knitted pressure sensor mats are breathable and stretchable. Application fields: posture detection in seats, back and arm rests; automotive and aerospace industry
- Knitted Fabric Circuit Board: conductive knitted yarns can serve as the layout for electrical connections between individual sensor and power nodes
- Possible future work: Personalised garments: In future customers can select their preferred colour scheme, scan their body outline and order a personalised garment
