SenseLab

A healthy and comfortable indoor climate is essential for good health. Children and adults are more and more often staying inside. Designing better indoor spaces becomes increasingly important – especially with complaints such as depression, migraine, poor concentration and behavioral problems increasingly being associated with a poor indoor environment.

The SenseLab was built in the Science Centre Delft in order to gain a better understanding of what is important for a nice, healthy working environment. Under the direction of prof.dr.ir. Philomena Bluyssen faculty researchers are going to work together with primary school pupils to see how they can create a better indoor environment by means of smell, ventilation, temperature, light, color and sound.

There is a gigantic installation room underneath the lab that is fully equipped with climate control and measuring equipment. Above are the light and sound installations. Together with interchangeable walls, floor, and ceiling, it is possible to adjust the airflow, temperature, light and sound simulation in the lab with flawless precision.

Testing Chambers

In addition we offer four lifelike cold rooms where there are separate tests for air, thermal, light and acoustic quality. The primary school students learn in a playful way what factors influence their senses. At the same time, the test results provide input for the researchers of the Chair in the Indoor Environment to determine how classrooms can be better detailed for a healthier and more comfortable environment for each pupil.

During the weekends and the holidays the SenseLab is open to public. You can visit the 4 test rooms at fixed times and under the supervision of a TU-student. This way you can learn more about the different senses here and you can experience them yourself.
