On-going Msc work on protection

Goal of the research:

LDPE plants in chemical industry have double feeders with transfer scheme. The LDPE plant has large synchronous compressors running and are not able to ride through a power dip or transfer from one feeder to the other. A new fast transfer relay is on the market Siemens 7VU68 relay. This relay can handle 3 breakers for a main tie main transfer. The goal of the project is to:

  • to develop a new transfer scheme based on the 7VU relaying so that synchronous motors ride through a transfer.
  • to model the synchronous motor behavior in EMTP-ATP.
  • to use Omicron test set to playback the simulated cases and optimize settings for the 7VU relay.

The project is realized in collaboration with DOW chemical company in the Netherlands.

The Delft Power System Protection Centre received a NWO grant

The TU Delft Power System Protection Centre (PSPC), under leadership of Marjan Popov (Department Electrical Sustainable Energy), has received a 5-year NWO grant for research on ‘Resilient Synchromeasurement-based Grid Protection Platform’. The research will be performed in close cooperation with the industrial partners of PSPC who all actively support the research. These partners are: Alliander, TenneT, GE, Enduris, Stedin and VSL.

About the research

Low, medium and high voltage networks present different kind of disturbances, which may result in power swings causing unnecessary protection operation or failure of components. The main goal of this project is to find the cause of disturbance in the power system and to apply corrective measures, so that the system continues its operation without the interruption of power supply.
