Project title: Re-purposing the European gas grid for hydrogen transport

Optimization modelling of large-scale energy systems is a valuable tool that helps policymakers plan for new strategies and regulations to achieve a cost-effective energy transition. The integration of hydrogen as a key enabler for this transition is important, however, most large-scale energy system models do not take into account a hydrogen grid in their analysis. To address this limitation, I plan to include hydrogen pipelines as part of the analysis scope in the Calliope energy system modelling software. By doing so, we can better understand the potential benefits and challenges of hydrogen integration in large-scale energy systems. Specifically, I aim to identify the required capacity and distribution of a hydrogen grid in Europe under a fully renewable scenario.
