Lorenz Baumgartner
Background
I received a BSc and a MSc degree in Chemical Engineering from the Technical University Munich researching in the fields of heterogeneous catalysis and microfluidics. After graduating, I worked as a research engineer on online reaction optimization at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for 1.5 years. Currently, I am pursuing a PhD degree in the field of Electrochemistry at the Transport Phenomena group.
Research
Electrochemical CO2 reduction has the potential of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and storing excess electricity from renewable energy sources in the form of hydrocarbons. However, the economical implementation is currently restricted by the stability and scale of the process. I intend to quantify the scale-up limitation imposed by the limiting mass transport phenomena using electrochemical and imaging techniques. Using this information, I want to to optimize the design and process parameters for large scale electrolyzer systems.
