Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Week; tips on how to create an inclusive classroom

Nieuws - 04 oktober 2023 - Teaching Support

This week TU Delft celebrates our differences during the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Week (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Week (tudelft.nl)). It is a great time for all of us to think about how we can create a classroom environment where we foster a sense of belonging for all of our students. We are hoping to help you on your way by sharing some helpful resources.

  • Words matter. That is why TU Delft has created guidelines for inclusive language to ensure that everybody feels welcome and accepted. The guide is a living document, so feel free to share your own suggestions with the authors. You can find the guide here: Inclusief_taalgebruik_TU_Delft_ENG.pdf (tudelft.nl)
  • Do you know how you can support your students with a visual impairment? Or which small changes you could make in your classroom to better accommodate students with autism? This resource offers tips and quick fixes to make your class more accessible for students with functional disabilities. Tips and quick fixes for teachers for inclusive education for students with functional disabilities - Intranet (tudelft.nl)
  • Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is an approach to educational design that makes inclusivity the norm. The UDL guidelines offer suggestions on how you can make your classroom more inclusive on three different levels: motivation (engagement), how you offer the information to the students (representation) and how you ask your students to express their understanding (expression). This handy overview was created by the Expert Center on Inclusive Education and is one of many useful guides on their website (ECIO | Expert centre on inclusive education)

If your students are in need of support themselves, you can refer them to the Contact Centre for general queries ( https://www.tudelft.nl/en/student/administration/contact-centre or contactcentre-esa@tudelft.nl) or to the TU Delft career and counselling services ( https://www.tudelft.nl/en/student/counselling or careerandcounsellingservices@tudelft.nl )

Please reach out to us if you have another resource on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion that you think we should share on our website.

Let us all work towards a TU Delft where everybody feels welcome and included.
