The book 'Unsteady Flow in Open Channels' by professor emeritus Jurjen Battjes & Robert Jan Labeur (fluid mechanics) has been selected for the prestigious Outstanding Academic Titles 2017 list in Choice magazine.

Labeur and Battjes published the book at Cambridge University Press last year. The Choice: Current Reviews for Academic Libraries is a publication of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). Every year in the January issue, Choice publishes their list of chosen Outstanding Academic Titles (spread over academic disciplines and publishers) that were reviewed during the previous year.

The criteria for selection in this list includes overall the reviewer’s evaluation, excellence in presentation and scholarship, importance relative to other literature in the field, distinction as a first treatment of a given subject in book or electronic form, originality or uniqueness of treatment, value to undergraduate students, and importance in building undergraduate library collections.

The book is intended for students and professionals working in environmental water systems, in areas such as coasts, rivers, harbours, drainage, and irrigation canals. The book proposes a unified theoretical framework for the different types of shallow flow, providing a coherent approach to interpret the behaviour of such flows, and highlighting the similarities and differences.
