Project: Artis is transporting seawater from Zeeland to Amsterdam (170 km) for refreshing the water in the seawater aquaria. The idea is to “produce” in the future seawater from a brackish groundwater well by concentrating it about two times with membrane filtration. This should be more sustainable because of  transport is avoided. Also the installation can be part of an educational showcase, explaining the technology. In a pre-study a possible scenario is proposed based on a lot of assumptions. From this pre-study it is clear that also a number of heavy metals and phosphate should be removed.

The process suggested in the pre-study was:

1) Aeration and rapid sand filtration to remove iron and phosphate

2) Ion exchange resin to remove heavy metals

3) RO to concentrate the brackish water 2.2 times

Experimental description:

*Define possible scenarios based on the available report and further literature research

*design lab experiments for at least two scenarios

*perform lab experiments with water from the brackish water well from Artis

*optimize to obtain the best water quality possible

*define which elements should be added

 Requirements:

*Knowledge about treatment technologies

*affinity with lab experiments

*Artis should be informed in a regular meetings
