2018 Stockholm Water Prize for TU Delft biotech pioneer Mark van Loosdrecht
Professors Mark van Loosdrecht (Delft University of Technology) and Bruce Rittmann (Arizona State University) are named the 2018 Stockholm Water Prize Laureates for revolutionizing water and wastewater treatment. By developing microbiological processes in wastewater treatment, they have demonstrated the possibilities to cut costs, reduce energy consumption and even recover chemicals and nutrients for recycling. Their pioneering research and innovations have led to a new generation of energy-efficient water treatment processes that can effectively extract nutrients and other chemicals – both valuable and harmful - from wastewater.

TPM launches HumTech Lab
The Humanitarian Technology (or “HumTech”) Lab brings together students and researchers who contribute their expertise to design, develop, implement, and evaluate new technologies for humanitarian aid. Through this initiative, HumTech Lab aims to bring technology-driven, evidence-based solutions to humanitarian aid and disaster relief operations.

Signifant funding for smart & cheaper medical devices
Jenny Dankelman, full professor of minimally invasive surgery and interventional techniques, and Tim Horeman, assistant professor of sustainable surgery at the Department of BioMechanical Engineering, will receive significant funding from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research and the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (NWO/ZonMw) for their research initiative entitled ‘SMART Surgical system: High-quality medical devices making minimally invasive surgery applicable to low-resource settings’.

Tailor-made training on innovation and entrepreneurship in Uganda
Early December TU Delft and Makerere University with funding from Nuffic implemented a tailor made training on “Innovation and Entrepreneurship to aid agricultural value chains”. The training lasted 2 weeks during which TU Delft trainers and participants discussed and identified challenges in doing entrepreneurship along agricultural value chains.

Data revolution in disaster management
Professor Bartel Van de Walle and researcher Kenny Meesters are investigating the role played by information in emergency relief efforts. In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, they collected data during a special hackathon for students. One conclusion could be drawn straight away: Delft students are keen to help.
