In 2009 Zhen Yang obtained his Bachelor degree in Traffic Engineering at Beijing Institute of Technology. After that, he entered Tongji University to do a master study in Railway Engineering. In 2012, Zhen Yang got his master degree and started as a PhD student at the Section of Road and Railway Engineering of TU Delft. His research focuses on noise of railway systems.

In general, railway noise can be divided into three categories: rolling noise, impact noise and squeal noise. Rolling noise is generated by irregularities of the wheel/rail running surfaces. Significant progress has been made regarding rolling noise in both theory and practice. However, due to the complex contact form, study on the other two categories is not fully developed yet. Zhen Yang’s study focuses on the generation and radiation of these two categories of railway noise.
