What’s the Virtual Playground

Virtual Playground is a Community powered by the TU Delft NewMedia Centre that brings together VR/AR/Tech Media enthusiasts from the academy and business world. Professors, lecturers, students, researchers, specialists, startup founders and global corporations get together to learn from each other and increase their network.

The story of the Community

Virtual Playground was launched in May 2020 and has almost 150 members at the moment.  Members already got to meet corporations like HP, KLM, Valve and institutions like the University of Canterbury (New Zealand), Iowa State University (USA), Monterrey Technical Institute (Mexico). There are three types of meet-ups taking place: moderated networking aimed at discussing specific topics (from gaming to architecture), Virtual Rooftop Chat with invited experts from big corporations (where all the visitors set their Zoom virtual background to a rooftop image to get a fancy vibe) and Virtual Month (a series of weekly sessions with invited experts from a specific field). This March was named VR Education Month with weekly talks on hologram teachers, VR training and Augmented Reality lab experiments. The month of November was dedicated to VR Architecture and October was all about VR/AR Research with top researchers from five different countries sharing their expertise.

Benefit from the community

One of the main benefits and unique points about Virtual Playground is the opportunity to learn in a very informal atmosphere: unlike webinars, the sessions always include a networking part and a chance to talk to each other. Besides, the Community members are truly excited about the topics, which makes the sessions really engaging and fun for both speakers and listeners.
