Zero Emission Vessels – Research Challenges

Summary:

Shipping is a major greenhouse gas (GHG) emitting sector of the global economy. The de-carbonisation of shipping, or the transition towards Zero-Emission Vessels (ZEV), will require a change in the energy that is used on-board. However, the use of these alternative fuels and power conversion systems poses a number of challenges.

This is an exploratory study with the aim of identifying research challenges in the energy transition in ships. The focus is on system level studies, especially:

  • system integration
  • system dynamics, and
  • reliability.
