Regarding courses, the Traffic Dynamics Modelling and Control Lab is involved in teaching in the Master programmes Civil Engineering, Transport, Infrastructure and Logistics, and Systems and Control. Note that also students from other programmes (mathematics, physics, aerospace engineering) are welcome to take the courses, provided they have the required prior knowledge.

Traffic Flow Modelling and Control Part I (CIE4825)

In the first part of this course we introduce the main concepts and relations in traffic flow theory and control theory, such as the traffic density, traffic flow, and the fundamental diagram. Furthermore, we discuss microscopic traffic flow models describing individual driver behaviour, and kinematic wave theory describing the dynamics of traffic jams. In the second part of the course we discuss control approaches to improve traffic performance, such as signal control, ramp metering, and a variable speed limit algorithm.

Traffic Flow Modelling and Control Part II (CIE5821)

We cover different advanced topics on motorway and urban traffic flow modelling and control. In the modelling part of the course we further elaborate on macroscopic traffic flow models, including moving bottlenecks in kinematic wave theory, and discuss key notions for network-wide traffic dynamics, such as node models and the network fundamental diagram. In the control part, advanced topics are covered, including traffic state estimation, vehicle-actuated and coordinated signal control, and advanced motorway traffic control applications.
