Profile

Sebastian is the Professor for Sustainable Geoenergy. Before joining the TU Delft, he worked for 16 years at Heriot-Watt University where he held the Energi Simulation Chair for Fractured and Geothermal Reservoirs, was the Director of the Institute of Geoenergy Engineering, and was the Director of Research for the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society. In 2017 Sebastian received the Alfred Wegener Award from EAGE and in 2020 he was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Scotland’s national academy of science and letters. He holds a PhD degree from ETH Zurich and MS degree from Oregon State University.

Research

Sebastian’s research focuses on developing and applying agile workflows to tackle the multiple challenges inherent to characterising and modelling geologically complex, and often fractured, geoenergy reservoirs across scales, and simulating the wide range of fluid movements through them, focusing on hot water but also the movement of CO2 and hydrogen. Sebastian graduated over 30 PhD students, supervised over 100 MSc theses, and trained 12 postdoctoral researchers. He has published over 200 reviewed technical papers in conferences or peer-reviewed journals, and edited one book.

Sebastian has delivered a range of graduate and professional development courses focusing on fluid flow processes in geological reservoirs, geothermal energy, and characterising and modelling fractured (carbonate) reservoirs.

Projects

Rapid Reservoir Modelling (RRM) https://rapidreservoir.org/

RRM is a joint research project with Imperial College London and the University of Calgary, aiming to develop innovative open-source reservoir modelling software that builds geologically consistent 3D models in real-time from 2D sketches, including immediate feedback on key (dynamic) reservoir properties.

 

PETRONAS Centre for Subsurface Engineering and Energy Transition (PACESET)

PACESET, based at Heriot-Watt University, focuses on the development of new technologies that aim to increase the sustainable use of the subsurface for low-carbon energy solutions.

Other activities

Sebastian is very active in professional societies such as EAGE, where he served on numerous committees and chaired workshops and conferences. He is also an instructor for HOT Engineering, a Board Member for the Scottish Energy Forum, and a scientific advisor to NAGRA (Swiss National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste).
