Within the Computer Simulations for Science and Engineering (COSSE) master program is scheduled in the spring semester. The objectives of the joint workshop are:
- To enhance the network between the COSSE students, teachers and researchers of the partner universities,
- To teach the COSSE students and give them an overview of the teaching and research of the partner universities,
- To invite distinguished visiting professors in order to learn state of the art techniques which are used in the Computational Science and Engeneering domain,
- To obtain more information of the cultural background of the participating countries.
The Applied Mathematics department of the Delft University of Technology shall organise the first joint COSSE workshop entitled Mathematics in Waterland.
The motivation of this title is clear if one considers the struggle of the Dutch people against the sea. The most important part of the Netherlands is below sea level and only well designed dykes, rivers and coastal protection structures make it possible to survive in this part of Europe. Besides experiments and theory, Computational Fluid Dynamics is of primary importance to design these structures.
In order to achieve the above mentioned goals the following activities are scheduled for the workshop:
- Two invited speakers Eric Deleersnijder and Katarina Gustavsson shall present two lectures, one introductory and one more advanced on their specific domain of interest.
- From all partner universities two speakers are present to give some background on the partner universities and explain the domains of expertise of the groups, which are involved in the COSSE program.
- Four teams of students are formed which worked on a project (all related to problems with water in the Netherlands). At the final day each group has to present their solution of the considered problems. The groups are formed such that all students of a group are going to the same host university at the second year of the program.
- An excursion is planned to Deltares which is the leading, independent, Dutch-based research institute and specialist consultancy for matters relating to water, soil and the subsurface. Deltares applies their advanced expertise to help people live safely and sustainably in delta areas, coastal zones and river basins.
- Finally a visit is planned to Museum Lambert van Meerten which shows a collection of artefacts that was brought together by the rich industrial and art collector Lambert van Meerten and Museum Het Prinsenhof.
The Museum Het Prinsenhof tells the story of William of Orange and his role in the creation of the Dutch Republic.
