Oscar Pastor Serrano

Proton therapy is emerging as an alternative to conventional radiotherapy due to its ability to spare normal tissue and treat localized tumors with highly conformal doses. Many proton therapy treatment centers are being constructed worldwide, but there are still some few remaining problems to solve before this promising type of cancer treatment is definitely consolidated. One of these key issues concerns the detrimental effect of treatment uncertainties on the final dose. These uncertainties not only arise from positioning and range errors, but also from organ movements during (and between) treatment sessions.

The main idea behind Oscar’s research is to develop methods that help to quickly evaluate the effect of organ motion and breathing motion uncertainties on the final dose. These methods will allow to evaluate robustness of treatment plans and thus check if the prescribed doses are met under any possible error scenario. Finally this will lead to the development of robustness recipes and guidelines that could be applied in any treatment center around the world.”
