National Plant Collection Foundation

This foundation is an alliance of twenty Dutch botanic gardens. The aim among others is the preservation of the botanical heritage which is distributed over the various gardens. To do this efficiently each garden takes care of a number of plant families. By doing so the complete collection can be conservated, tracing omissions and avoiding doubles.

The other goals of the foundation are to:

- contribute to scientific education and research,

- support biological diversity,

- promote education of nature and environment,

- serve as a source of reference for horticulturists

- have an open eye for recreational aspects.

Plant families in the TU Delft Hortus Botanicus

The TU Delft Hortus Botanicus shelters 4 plant families of the National Plant Collection and a collection called Technical Plants. The existence of this last collection is directly linked to the specific nature of the Hortus Botanicus of the Technical University of Delft, which from its beginning focussed on economically useful plants, e.g. rubber, kapok, cocoa.

Technical plants
Hamamelidaceae
Marantaceae
Musaceae
Strelitziaceae

Burgers Zoo keeps a shadow collection of the Musaceae.
