Completed phase

The following parts of the research are now completed:

  1. Review on the current State-of-the-art on the driving metrics used in driving behaviour analysis and the methodologies developed for macroscopic driver profiles and microscopic driving patterns identification as well as for their short and long-term prediction
  2. Review on the Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence techniques exploited in the field of transportation safety. “The usefulness of Artificial Intelligence in safety assessment of different transportation modes. Dimitrios I. Tselentis, Eleonora Papadimitriou and Pieter van Gelder. Proceedings of the 8th Road Safety Simulation (RSS) International Conference 2022)
  3. Review on the causes and patterns of successful interactions as well as on the theoretical value and estimation of optimal driving. Road-safety-II: Opportunities and barriers for an enhanced road safety vision. Papadimitriou, E., Afghari, A. P., Tselentis, D., & van Gelder, P. Accident Analysis & Prevention, 174, 106723, 2022)
  4. The data collection from the i-Dreams database is completed, where a total of more than 26 thousand trips, which took place between September 2021 and June 2022 from 124 drivers, were collected in a disaggregate form
  5. The current travel patterns were explored using a Machine Learning clustering algorithm and their evolution while moving to the post-pandemic era was investigated. Insights were provided on how travel and driving patterns are related. The differences in the driving characteristics among travel behaviour profiles were revealed.

Current phase

The following parts of the research are currently in progress:

  1. The identification of driver profiles and driving patterns. This is implemented using Machine Learning clustering techniques data such as K-Means and Self-Organizing Maps to identify drivers with common behavioural characteristics. Driving patterns are recognized through Machine Learning clustering techniques for time-series data to identify patterns with common microscopic characteristics.
  2. The full structure of the methodological approach and the data analysis techniques are being finalized.

What's next?

The following parts of the research will be conducted during the next phase:

  1. Exploration of the connection between driver profiles and driving patterns and how these two concepts can be consolidated
  2. Investigation of the relationship between the number of accidents with driver profiles and driving patterns
  3. Further investigation of optimal driving
