Teaching and Learning Services (TLS) keeps you up to date of the training courses that will help you continue to improve your lecturing skills. This month, we're thrilled to share an exclusive interview with our Open Education Resources trainers, Marcell Várkonyi and Paschalis Kontanas.

Marcell is the project lead for Open Education in the Open Science programme, with a keen focus on Open Educational Resources (OER). Paschalis is the Copyright Expert of the Library, with legal background, focusing on Copyright Law. Recently, they conducted a training session on Teaching with OER, a collaborative effort between the Library and Teaching and Learning Services as part of our Continuing Professional Development Trainings. For more information about this course and next course dates, keep an eye on our Teaching support website. The Board of Examiners Training, a 5-hour foundational workshop for (new) members of the board of examiners, was successfully delivered twice. A few of the aspects that are reflected on during the training are identifying the role the participant has within the board, the different stakeholders that board members will be dealing with, and where to find assistance when needed. Topics covered during the training include: How to ensure test quality and discussions around the process towards visits/accreditations. The next training is scheduled in May. Personalized invitations to the members will be sent out soon. 

The Board of Studies workshop series was completed in January. A total of 64 students and lecturers members of the Board of Studies received training this season to become familiar with their roles and responsibilities. A new series of training sessions will be scheduled in the fall.

Discover the power of rubrics in enhancing grading and feedback: 

The workshop Rubrics - Consistent grading of assignments and projects will help you to understand the impact rubrics can have on grading and giving feedback on student work, learn the why’s and how’s behind aligning rubrics with your course’s learning objectives and instructions, and gain insights into converting rubric assessments into final grades. You will also explore how to develop rubrics with the help of generative AI. It starts on 25 March, free of charge. Learn more and register here

 

Brighten up! Master Brightspace: 

Take the Brightspace workshop to help you use the learning platform to the fullest. We will provide a basic training and a more advanced workshops. The basic format includes a step-by-step tour through the essential Brightspace functionalities, and covers the setup of several external learning tools such as FeedbackFruits, H5P, and Vevox. The advanced format is focused around analysing your own course in Brightspace using the Brightspace Matrix. It starts on 2 April, free of charge. Learn more and register here

 

Speed up your grading: 

During the hands-on workshop Speed Grading, we will delve into practical strategies for both short-term and long-term grading time reductions. As a participant, you will engage in meaningful discussions with colleagues from various departments within the TU. Together, you will explore opportunities and exchange best practices in a small group setting. A learning developer will share insights and tips to enhance your grading efficiency, while also providing the opportunity to refine your course assessment. It starts on 25 April, free of charge. Teaching assistants: 

We offer you two courses which you can follow for free, one for assisting with campus courses, and one for assisting with online courses. If you are a TA or working with a TA, this might be interesting for you!

Teaching Assistant Training for Campus Courses:

In this training the TA learns how to: support student motivation and create a safe study environment in which students can thrive; stimulate student learning by asking the right types of questions and giving the right types of answers; give effective feedback to students. The training is free of charge. There are two dates available: 29 April and 9 May, free of charge. Learn more and register here

Building and Moderating Extension School Courses:

This training is for lecturers and TAs building new online courses or working on re-runs of existing online courses with the Extension School. You will learn about the possibilities and tools of the edX platform for online courses such as MOOCs, and best practices for communicating with your online learners and moderating discussion boards.
