Mangroves in Motion: Investigating the impact of the Hai Phong Masterplan

Last September, Pepijn Prins, Donna Janssen , Hannah Kapper, Lisa Smulders, Stijn Lagerweij & Berend Krans travelled to Ha Noi, Vietnam to do research on mangrove forests and the surrounding impact.

With three different study backgrounds (CME, HE, and Biochemical), we conducted research on the impact of two upcoming ports in Hai Phong on the mangrove forests of Do Son. Using our diverse academic backgrounds, we examined the hydraulic changes of these port terminals, their influence on water quality, and conducted interviews with local people to assess their dependence and livelihoods linked to these forests. For this purpose, we undertook two field trips to the mangrove forests, as shown in the photo. The outcomes of our research reveal both positive and negative consequences of increased port activity near the two studied forests, along with the sentiments of the local population regarding the new plans. Besides the educational aspect of conducting research, we explored much of the country. During weekends, we visited different places and immersed ourselves in Vietnam's nature. Riding our own scooters, we navigated through the chaotic streets of Ha Noi daily towards the university. We preferred eating around the corner from our house on plastic chairs, surrounded by locals. We even made an effort to study the Vietnamese language to navigate ordering local food (e.g., Phở) and drinks (Bia Hoi).
