Safe-by-Design for Industrial Biotechnology

A TRL is a measure to indicate the matureness of a developing technology. When an innovative idea is discovered it is often not directly suitable for application. Usually such novel idea is subjected to further experimentation, testing and prototyping before it can be implemented. The image below shows how to read TRL’s to categorise the innovative ideas.

Summary of the project


The researchers are working on the innovative concept of safe-by-design for industrial biotechnology and how this can be put into researchers daily practice. In contrast to  often applied add-on measures and protocols aiming for inherent safety once a product has been designed, the safe by design approach stimulates inclusion of safety at the start of each experimental design.

For experimental designs that are ‘safe-by-design’ you would want to include various stakeholder perspectives as early in the design process as possible, varying from initial (experimental) designs to coming up with ideas for a product; its use, purpose, the risks etc. This is, however, a daunting task as at that moment of the research there are still so many uncertainties and unknown risks to consider. How to design for safety if the use is still unknown let alone who to engage? Hence, the researchers are developing means to stimulate responsible learning for possible stakeholders. A protocol for inherent safe design and a serious game for biosafety and biosecurity are being developed.

What's next?


Since safety is an emergent issue for policymaking, the next step for this research is to research how regulatory constrains can move or be altered with the pace of biotechnological developments. Addressing questions such as how new knowledge can be generated whilst safety is also taken into account. How can the frontier of science be pushed without taking unnecessary risks? Besides, there is little incentives for researchers to research the risk of their work. This would also be a next step.
