European Academy of Aeroacoustics

European Academy of Aeroacoustics

The University of Delft, University of Bristol, and the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics have launched the European Academy of Aeroacoustics.

The mission of the Academy is to provide high-level education, at the PhD and PostDoc level, on aeroacoustics topics with focus on recent advancements.

EA2 is promoted by CEAS-Aeroacoustics.

The EA2 Organization Team

Our Training Approach

The training provided by EA2 are in the format of modules featuring:

  • theoretical background;
  • hands-on activities;
  • brainstorming sessions.

The material dedicated to the important aspects associated with each topic is provided to the participants before the start of the course.

What you won't find

The conventional lecturing and conference presentation format, with slides and "one-man" shows.

What you will find

A stimulating learning environment experienced coaches guiding you with an inverted classroom style.

Detailed Activity Overview

In order to create a stimulating environment and allow the participant to familiarize with advanced multi-disciplinary aeroacoustic concepts in such a short time the following activities are planned for each course session:

Hands-on session of the course

Series of practical activities based on a-priori given lecture material. A strong focus will be given to laboratory sessions meant to understand specific aeroacoustic concepts.

The laboratories will be organized on the premises of the three founding institutions. Coaching and guidance, additionally fed with personal supervision if needed, will be provided by the EA2 experts, complemented with international scientists where appropriate.

Guided exercises

Numerical and experimental exercises will be formulated in a new format, with the intent of solving a specific research question relating to the analysis of the noise of a system or to the understanding of aeroacoustic source formulations.

A strong focus will be given to the new ideas provided by the participant, which will find together with the coach his/her own way to fulfill the assignment.

Workshops and brainstorming events

EA2 envisions brainstorming activities in the form of dedicated workshops to scientific problems in aeroacoustics, where attendees will be invited to share their latest results on specific topics. The aim is to promote idea exchanges between the participants. The workshop will end with a collection of the outcomes from the plenary sessions together with a summary of the presented material from the participants in form of posters.

International Relations

EA2 is supported by the Council of European Aerospace Societies (CEAS) which formed an Aeroacoustics Specialists’ Committee to serve and support the scientific and industrial aeroacoustics community in Europe.

Complementing and strengthening

The objective of EA2 is to deliver high-level education leveraging the most advanced methodologies for experimental and numerical topics relevant to the aeroacoustic research community. While the CEAS focuses on the organization of activities including:

  • the yearly AIAA/CEAS Aeroacoustics Conference,
  • the collection editing and publishing of the yearly highlights of the European aeroacoustics research,
  • conferences and workshops in aeroacoustics

EA2 is meant for the development of high-end professional education with specific hands-on training activities. The academy complements the broader educational activities of CEAS, with a new engaging format inspired by the Lorentz Center phylosophy, where researchers are invited to discuss and work together on scientific developments, ideas and plans in an open and interactive atmosphere.

EAA fosters a more fruitful time utilization for active discussions and informal interactions, departing from the conventional lecturing methodology, at the same time providing with high-quality educational activities to junior researchers and industrial participants.

Similarly to the new Marie Curie - Innovative Training Networks (ITN) from the European Commission, the trainings will involve experts in the contributing topics, additionally inviting the scientists to join the facilities located in different European countries.
