New academic year schedule for 2021-2022. What will change?

The new academic year schedule for 2021-2022 is now available online.

On behalf of the Executive Board, Vice President Education Rob Mudde announces that the adjustment in the academic year roster, which was previously  announced for 2020-2021, will be implemented in the coming academic year. This means that as of 2021/2022, the summer resit period will be moved to early July. This adjustment was postponed for a year due to the workload of lecturers and the uncertain situation caused by the Corona pandemic. The earlier decision was extensively discussed in consultation with the Directors of Education and several other stakeholders.

The reason for this change is primarily the desire to offer both lecturers and students an education-free period before the start of the new academic year. In addition, it is desirable to know early in the summer whether 1st year students have passed their binding study advice (BSA) and BSc students received their BSc diploma. Moreover, the resit period would have fallen in the middle of the summer school holidays for the Netherlands Central-region.
Finally, the measure also aims to relieve the peak pressure on Education and Student Affairs (ESA), as the processing of all data regarding the BSA, BSc diplomas, the smooth running of appeal procedures, etc. would benefit from an earlier publication of the results.

This means that in the summer of 2022, exam resits will be in week 28 (first half of July). To be able to realise this, we will cancel the often scheduled extra week in Q4; in this way Q4 will also be the regular 10-week long and have a shortened review period. To help lecturers with this change, the Executive Board will make extra support available for them as from Q4, through the Teaching and Learning Services department (for example webinars and exam-related information), and through financial assistance for educational support.
