TU Delft, like Universities across the world, is striving for an academic culture that celebrates, rewards and supports university teaching achievement. 

A leading person in the international movement in the establishment of an academic culture that celebrates, rewards and supports university teaching achievement is Dr. Ruth Graham who besides from designing a framework for Advancing Teaching, also launched the Teaching Culture survey that shines a spotlight on the culture and status of teaching in higher education at institutions allover the world.

How come we say ‘yes’ when we are asked to peer-review an article for Elsevier - invest our time and energy in an organisation for which we have to pay to return the favour, that is reading their articles; but we say ‘no’ when we are asked to peer-review a colleague lecturer within our own organisation that will make our own teaching and learning practice better. The ‘why?’ behind this might be the central question to the needed cultural change in our community and organisation.

Teaching is one of our main responsibilities as a university and thus a very important topic within the R&D conversation and in the academic career paths. 

There are many aspects to teaching; for instance teaching as a skill, coaching and guidance of colleagues, leadership roles in education. To evidence the teaching achievements of university teachers we need to go beyond the number of students a colleague supervises, the number of courses a colleague is involved in, and the UTQ/BKO requirement. We need to look at the broader spheres of influence and impact. 

TU Delft has created a guidance document laying out possible career paths for Associate Professor (UHD) and Full Professor (HL) with an emphasis on teaching. This guidance document sets out the career paths to provide guidelines to identify and discuss with staff with a teaching profile and stimulate a development path.
