Sample and Data Access

TU Delft and the Department of Geoscience and Engineering aim at producing data that are findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable (FAIR).

For the geothermal project, we aim that all scientific data follow these principles and act as an example to other projects in best practice. We also provide access to physical samples from the geothermal project and associated monitoring stations.

Sample Request Procedure

If you want to get access to the samples, please follow these steps:

1.    Check the availability of samples here.
2.    Write a proposal using this template.
3.    Submit your proposal at sample.geothermal@tudelft.nl.

Please, contact us to discuss the possibility of conducting tests (especially if they are destructive). Note that after approval, the sample user is asked to sign a user consent form dealing with requirements on for example data publications. We will also provide details on timeline of sampling and data delivery, sample labelling, sample return, sample storage conditions, etc

Proposals are assessed by a scientific committee on feasibility and quality of the proposal.

Committee

A committee judges upon all sample requests over a given period (within 1-2 months) and decides upon approval, rejection, or proposed modification of the request, based on scientific relevance and sample availability.

  • The committee consists of scientific researchers of the project and one independent member linked to EPOS-NL (or to COVRA for specific cores indicated in the sample list)
  • The committee communicates the decision in written form.

Access to Data

Research data from the geothermal project on TU Delft campus will be released publicly no later than at the time of publication of corresponding research papers, which is up to two years from the end of data collection. This policy is designed to avoid conflicts between our research activities and others. The embargo period may differ for different types of research data, with the intention to release as early as possible. During the embargo period, researchers will work‐up their data sets and publish their findings.

Visit our Geothermal Project on TU Delft Campus Collection to download public data sets available on our institutional data repository 4TU.ResearchData.

If you would like to have access to data before its public release, please send us an email at geothermal@tudelft.nl to discuss the possibilities. Access to data is in principle possible, if there are no identified conflicts between our research activities and your proposed data use.

Terms of Use

Embargos will apply to data files only. This means that a description of the data set contents (metadata) will be published as soon as possible after data collection. By the end of the embargo period, data files will become publicly available with CC BY 4.0 license. We may deviate from this licence choice, if specific needs are identified.

We deliberately choose the CC BY 4.0 license over the CC BY-SA 4.0 license to maximise data dissemination and use. This therefore, does not preclude others making data derivatives have a more restrictive licence. However, we strongly encourage to share all data derived from the usage of our data sets, as openly as possible.
