Ir. G. (Gert) Mulder


Gert Mulder received his master’s degree in Hydrology at Delft University of Technology in 2014. His graduation work was about the use of hydrological models and remote sensing data to monitor groundwater depletion in Northern Iraq. Following his studies he worked at UNESCO-IHE for one year on river basin hydrology based on remote sensing. In 2015 he joined the GRS department to work on his PhD thesis on the use of water vapour estimates in operational weather models.

My research focuses on the use of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) in weather models. Although many geoscientists consider the atmospheric signal in radar data as noise, we believe that it has a huge potential. This is because it provides high-resolution information on water vapour in the atmosphere, which is currently lacking. The main challenges in this research are the separation of the atmospheric signal from other signals and the integration of these data in weather models.
