Materials scientists unveil Rembrandt’s 3D technique

An international team of researchers, led by the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Rijksmuseum, have discovered how Rembrandt created a ‘3D effect’ in his paintings. To achieve this, Rembrandt used what is referred to as the impasto technique. The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) played a vital role in this. The results were published in the academic journal Angewandte Chemie. Victor Gonzalez, postdoc at the Department of MSE and lead author of the publication, worked on the research at MSE with Joris Dik, professor of art and archaeology.
