Name change faculty
The Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE) changed its name to Mechanical Engineering, ME for short, on 1 January 2024. With this name, we return to the basis that connects all disciplines within the faculty and strengthen our external profile.
The faculty discussed a name change for some time because its old name no longer reflected the faculty's content. The new name is future-proof and also offers room for new, fast-growing disciplines and research areas such as biomedical technology, robotics and energy transition. The new name has a connective character, suiting the profile of a versatile faculty that encourages collaboration with an open attitude.
The names of all bachelor’s and master’s programmes will remain unchanged. The academic departments will also keep their current names.
After consultations with employees from education and research, study associations, professional field and the employee participation body, the Executive Board decided positively on the proposal for this name change in February 2023.
Mechanical Engineering provides a foundation for all disciplines within the faculty and highlights the core of teaching and research activities. The new faculty name thereby contributes to greater cohesion within the faculty.
The new name raises our external profile. Mechanical Engineering increases our international recognition and visibility and enhances the appeal of the faculty for talented researchers and employees.
The new name improves the (online) communication and visibility of the faculty. This is because the old name neither reflected our three undergraduate programmes nor our departments. The full name was illogical and long and the abbreviation 3mE was not sufficiently recognised.

So for a while, there is a chance that you will see both names. Mainly within education and in some ICT systems, changes will take place in 2024. All stakeholders will be regularly informed about what the name change means for processes, systems and communication, among other things.

The name in metal letters above the main entrance, 'Werktuigbouwkunde en Scheepsbouwkunde’, will remain. This is because that part of the building has a monument status, which means that no changes can be made. The yellow letters on the front facade will be replaced with new yellow letters, with LED lighting. In addition, the wayfinding on the entire TU Delft Campus will also be adjusted in 2024 Q1.

This is because the literal Dutch translation (Werktuigbouwkunde) has a much narrower connotation and thus does not cover the scope of the faculty. The name of the Bachelor programme will remain Werktuigbouwkunde.

It is important to maintain the visibility of these mostly unique study programmes. The academic departments will also keep their current names.
