Henriëtte (1846-1937) was a talented artist who made beautiful watercolour posters for her brother to use during his lectures before photography and the magic lantern came into use.

His sisters, Henriëtte and Johanna, lived with Martinus for most of their lives. We know little about Johanna except that she owned a camera – perhaps she was responsible for the earliest photographs in the glass negative collection?

Henriëtte’s diary gives us a picture of Martinus as a rather shy, retiring man who became a world-famous scientist despite poor health and chronic depression.
